Family Friendly Vancouver – Sarah (Reality Church)

I love raising our family in Vancouver. I’m honoured to share what we enjoy about the city.

downtown from lonsdale quayWe live in Gastown, just west of the Downtown Eastside. My recommendations for the Vancouver experience come out of our life stage, which determines my activity. If you are bringing children or are interested in exploring downtown I think you’ll enjoy some of my suggestions.

First things first: coffee. If you’re looking for a quality cup of coffee I recommend Revolver or Timbertrain. If you’d like more of a treat try Cafe Medina and their lavender milk chocolate latte and waffles with specialty sauces.

view from crab park pierVisit Emery Barnes Park in Yaletown for green grass and creative climbing equipment or if you’re up for a longer walk head over the Main Street bridge to Crab Park which is right on the water and has everything: a playground, summer spray park, beach and pier, and a view of the mountains, shipyards, Canada Place and helicopter pad. You can never go wrong with Stanley Park!

If it’s raining and you need something to do with the kids visit the library or the Aquarium, or if you have a YMCA membership it is accepted at Vancouver locations.

Our kids love to ride the Seabus from Waterfront Station to the Lonsdale Quay. At the Quay there is an indoor market with fresh produce, fish, sweets, all kinds of shops and an eating area.

If you’re in the mood for some site-seeing and shopping, come to Gastown! And if you have time, sign up for a historic walking tour and learn the story of Vancouver in the neighbourhood where it all began.

convention centreIn Gastown there are shops and restaurants and historical sites like the Steam Clock and the Gassy Jack statue. Head into Chinatown (and get a piece of pie at The Pie Shoppe or some Chinese baking at New Town) or west to Canada Place, the Convention Centre and the Olympic Cauldron (visit the Olympic torches, medals and podium inside).

crab park 2If you need somewhere family-friendly to eat I recommend Steamworks (kids menu, west coast food and good desserts),  a burger and fries at Five Guys or Peckinpah for Carolina BBQ. If you want to enjoy something special I recommend Cactus Club, The Flying Pig or Water Street Cafe.

If you’re here on Sunday join us at Reality Church Vancouver or at Westside Church. Welcome to Vancouver!

You are invited to Gathering 2014!

You are invited!

We are living at a unique time in history. Many Canadians are looking for meaning, hope, joy, community and significance – things that ultimately can only be experienced in Christ and his community. Gathering 2014 is focused on answering the need we see across Canada for people to connect with their Creator, with Jesus. Join together with Mennonite Brethren from coast to coast as we focus on God’s call on us as his people. Join together with our Canadian brothers and sisters in worship, in prayer, in celebration as we hear what God is doing across our great land, and in discernment as we process strategic issues for the health of our churches and the effectiveness of our mission. See you in Vancouver!

  • Willy Reimer, Executive Director, Canadian Conference of MB Churches

Gathering is a fantastic opportunity to gain friendships and reaffirm old ones as we celebrate what God is doing among us as a national church and beyond, are challenged in his Word and as we realign to what the Spirit wants to do among us. You are invited to come as a delegate from your church to listen, learn and speak forward in leadership on important strategic initiatives. Financial updates, budget planning, stewardship report, strategic values and key services offered by the conference are items we will consider for greater Kingdom impact. We look forward to seeing you in Vancouver!
